Darn Tough Vermont knits Merino wool socks in Northfield, Vermont — the same small mill town where the Cabot family has been making socks since 1978. The company as it exists today took shape in 2004, when third-generation owner Ric Cabot decided to stop competing on price with overseas manufacturers and start competing on quality instead. The bet was radical: make the best sock anyone's ever worn, guarantee it for life, and let the product speak for itself.
That unconditional lifetime guarantee isn't marketing fluff. It's the entire business model. If your Darn Tough socks wear through — from any cause, at any point — you send them back and get a new pair. No receipt needed. No questions asked. This forces the company to obsess over durability in a way that most brands simply don't have to. Every stitch is a liability if it fails, so every stitch has to hold.
The socks are knit from fine-gauge Merino wool, which naturally regulates temperature, wicks moisture, and resists odor far better than cotton or synthetics. Darn Tough sources high-micron-count Merino and blends it with nylon for strength, running everything through Italian-made Lonati knitting machines at their Northfield facility. They've invested millions in that mill over the years, and every single pair ships from Vermont.
What sets them apart goes beyond the warranty. The density of the knit is something you can feel immediately — these aren't your standard hiking socks. They fit like compression wear, with targeted cushioning zones and true anatomical shaping (left sock, right sock). Runners, thru-hikers, military personnel, and nurses all swear by them, often for different models in the lineup.
Darn Tough remains fully owned by the Cabot family. No private equity. No corporate parent company. They employ around 300 people in a Vermont town of about 6,000 — and they're one of the last vertical sock manufacturers left in the United States.
