Jennifer Morsell started making soap in North Pole, Alaska in 2000. Not as a business pitch or a brand exercise — she wanted soap that worked in harsh winters without stripping her skin raw. Twenty-five years and a relocation to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho later, Mountain Madness Soap Co. is still a one-founder operation, still handmade from scratch, and still rooted in the same principle: if you wouldn't put it on your own face, don't sell it.
Every bar is cold-processed in small batches at their Idaho facility. The team has grown to about 15 people, but Jennifer still oversees formulation. The ingredient lists skew short and readable — plant-based oils, essential oils, natural colorants. No synthetic fragrances, no detergents, no palm oil fillers dressed up in botanical marketing.
The product range has expanded well beyond soap. Bath bombs, sugar scrubs, lotion bars, body butter, and lip balms round out a lineup that covers daily skincare without requiring a medicine cabinet overhaul. Each product ships from Coeur d'Alene, and they've filled orders to all 50 states.
What earned Mountain Madness a PBS Northwest Profiles feature and Idaho SBDC recognition isn't flashy branding — it's durability. A quarter-century of consistent, small-batch production in a market littered with brands that launch, scale too fast, and cut corners. Jennifer didn't take outside funding. She grew at the pace the product allowed.
The pricing reflects handmade quality without pretension. Individual bars run in the $7-$10 range, and larger sets offer decent value. You won't find them at Target, and that's the point.
