Idahound started the way a lot of good pet food companies do: one sick dog and an owner who refused to accept "normal." Chris Cey, a high school science teacher in Idaho's Wood River Valley, watched his British Pointer struggle through long chukar hunts on commercial kibble. The digestive issues were obvious. The fix was too. Cey built a raw diet from wild Idaho game, organ meats, local organic produce, and powdered eggshell. His dog Bert thrived.
Two friends — John David Davidson and Alec Barfield — saw the results and pitched Cey on turning the recipe into a business. In 2014, Idahound was born in Carey, Idaho, population 600-something. The three co-founders butchered, deboned, processed, and packaged the first batches themselves. That hands-on approach hasn't changed.
Today Idahound operates its own FDA-inspected facility in Carey, where the team still processes everything in-house. Every protein — beef, lamb, rabbit — is sourced 100% from Idaho ranches. The vegetables are organic and local. The supply chain runs about 50 miles end to end, which is unheard of for a pet food company selling nationally.
The product line stays simple: frozen raw patties and dehydrated options, all species-appropriate and built around whole prey ratios. No fillers, no synthetic vitamins, no rendered mystery meals. The ingredient lists read like a butcher's ticket — ground beef, beef heart, beef liver, organic kale, organic squash, eggshell calcium. That's it.
Idahound is completely self-funded. The founders have said publicly they're not chasing acquisition or outside capital. They want to make good food for dogs using Idaho-raised animals, processed at their own facility, sold direct. The model is vertically integrated in a way that most pet food brands can't match — farm to bowl with almost no intermediaries.
