The family behind it, Darryl, Melissa, and their son Axel, relocated to North Central Idaho from Ashland, Oregon in 2012, drawn by the wildness of the country and the chance to build a more self-reliant life closer to family.

For years, they wildcrafted elderberries from the forests and meadows around their home, making syrups for personal use and for neighbors who asked. The shift to a commercial operation happened in 2020, when COVID layoffs collided with Axel finishing school. Bitterroot Botanicals of Idaho LLC was born not from a business plan but from circumstance meeting years of accumulated skill.

Their elderberry syrups are wildcrafted, meaning the berries are harvested from wild-growing plants rather than cultivated rows. It's a slower, more labor-intensive process that depends on knowing where the elderberry patches grow and when they're ready. The family forages responsibly, taking only what the land can sustain. Their flagship wildcrafted elderberry syrup uses raw wildflower honey as a sweetener — no refined sugar, no corn syrup.

Beyond syrups, the product line includes elderflower cordial, loose-leaf herbal tea blends like their Elder Fairy Tea, and an elderberry fire cider that combines the berries with apple cider vinegar and warming spices. Everything is produced in small batches. The family handles every step, from foraging to bottling.
