Bob Rebholtz, Sr. founded Agri Beef near the banks of the Snake River in American Falls, Idaho in 1968. It was straightforward beef country work — ranching, feeding, processing, doing it well. The Snake River Valley had the land, the water, and the ranching tradition to support a serious beef operation. Bob built one.

What made Snake River Farms different came later, in the 1980s, when the Rebholtz family began breeding pure Japanese Wagyu genetics with quality American cattle. This was well before Wagyu became a buzzword on restaurant menus. The family saw something in the extreme marbling of Japanese Wagyu — a richness and buttery texture that exceeded anything the USDA grading scale was built to measure — and believed American palates would eventually respond to it if the beef were raised and finished properly.

They were early. They were patient. They were right.

SRF American Wagyu is now the largest American Wagyu beef operation in North America, and it's still family-owned and operated, more than 56 years after Bob Rebholtz, Sr. started Agri Beef. The company oversees the entire supply chain — from the family-owned ranches where their cattle are raised, to their own processing facility, to their in-house customer care team. They call it ranch-to-table, and they mean it literally.

The beef regularly exceeds USDA Prime on the marbling scale, reaching grades that technically fall off the top of the standard chart. The fat distribution is even and fine throughout the muscle, producing steaks with a characteristic richness and unctuousness that's distinct from conventional beef. SRF products are served in top restaurants across the country — and also available direct to consumers online, shipped nationwide in insulated recyclable packaging.

What hasn't changed in 56 years: the family's name on the company, the Idaho address, and the commitment to doing the full supply chain themselves rather than handing off to commodity processors.

Why We List Them

Snake River Farms has been family-owned and Idaho-based for over half a century. They pioneered American Wagyu decades before it was trendy, built their own supply chain from ranch to table, and never sold. In a beef industry dominated by four multinational packers controlling most of the market, SRF represents what genuine independent ownership and a long-term product vision looks like.
