Arron Kallenberg grew up on the back deck of his family's commercial fishing boat in Alaska. His father was a fisherman. His grandfather was a fisherman. As a kid, eating wild salmon and halibut was just what you did — you subsistence-fished, picked berries, dug clams, grew vegetables in the summer and froze them for winter. Then he moved to the Lower 48 for college and realized how hard it was to find real seafood.

He spent his twenties in tech. By his mid-thirties, he'd seen enough of the global industrial food system — the seafood fraud, the farmed salmon flooding the market, the fact that Alaska exports three-quarters of its wild-caught fish overseas while American consumers eat imported, lower-quality substitutes — that he felt he had no choice. Wild Alaskan Company launched in 2017 as a direct-to-consumer subscription connecting people with the sustainably-harvested, wild-caught fish from the fisheries he grew up in.

The sourcing is serious. Alaska's state constitution mandates that fisheries be managed on the principle of sustained yield — a gold standard that no other state or country matches.
