Oterra Designs

Oterra Designs is a Biddeford, Maine, gear studio founded by Erin O'Toole in 2020 after years working as a product designer and developer in the outdoor industry. The first pieces were personalized chalk bags and buckets made for friends. Other climbers kept asking why she wasn't selling them. That is usually a good sign.

The ownership check is clear. Oterra's own about page names Erin O'Toole as founder and explains the 2020 launch. Maine Made, the state-run maker program, lists Oterra in Biddeford with Erin's contact information and repeats the founder story. WMTW separately profiled O'Toole hand-stitching chalk bags and buckets in her Biddeford studio. We found no corporate parent, acquisition record, or match in the corporate-parent exclusion list.

The product line stays close to the workbench: chalk bags, chalk buckets, first-aid kits, recycled gear totes, bike bags, pouches, hats, stickers, and custom-color pieces. Oterra says it uses recycled and repurposed materials when possible, including 100% recycled Polartec fleece in its chalk bags, recycled paper tags, hemp cord, compostable wrapping, and no single-use plastic packaging.

This is the part we care about most: Oterra treats outdoor gear as something to keep using. The company says its products are built to last and asks customers to send failed gear back so the studio can try to repair it. That's a better answer than the usual sustainability paragraph pasted under a product grid.

Climbing gear still needs scrutiny. Chalk bags and totes are not life-support equipment in the way ropes, harnesses, or protection are, but they still get dragged across rock, gym floors, trailheads, and car trunks. Oterra's case is practical: small-batch construction, repair-minded ownership, traceable maker, and materials chosen with less waste in mind. The designs have personality, but the stronger claim is accountability: one named maker, one Maine studio, and a visible repair ethic.
