Josh and Holly Allen know pet retail from the inside. They built Dee-O-Gee, an award-winning chain of independent holistic pet supply stores in Bozeman, Montana, and eventually sold it. They'd also launched a dog toy line and pet scheduling software. By the time they started Montana Dog Food Co in 2021, they'd spent years watching firsthand what dogs actually thrive on — and what the pet food industry gets wrong.

The company makes freeze-dried raw dog food, treats, and supplements from Western US ingredients. The "Adventure Fuel" meal line runs 85% real animal protein — free-range beef, cage-free chicken, ranch-raised bison — with antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, prebiotics, and probiotics. Every recipe is grain-free. Freeze-drying locks in nutrients without cooking, which is the whole point of going raw. The treats, branded "Trail Snacks," are single-ingredient and single-protein: bison liver, duck, beef heart, pork tenderloin. Nothing else in the bag.

All ingredients are sourced and produced in the US. No mystery supply chains running through overseas processors. They also sell vet-formulated dog supplements for joint health, digestion, and immune support.

The pet food industry has a consolidation problem. Mars owns Royal Canin, Nutro, Iams, and dozens more. Smucker's bought Big Heart Pet Brands. Nestlé runs Purina. When a small brand gets traction, a conglomerate usually buys it and the formulas start drifting toward cheaper ingredients. Montana Dog Food Co sits outside that cycle entirely.
